"WOW, that is one MEAN looking knife!" You will start to hear this phrase more and more if you pick up one of Cold Steel's Black Talon folding knives.
Looks aside, the Black Talon is made with the highest quality materials. With a suggested retail value of 9.99, you should expect a top-notch piece of work.
I was fortunate enough to get my very own Black Talon for a good price recently and here are my thoughts:
What I like About It:
1. Black Talon is not just a clever name. It describes the "talon-style" point on the knife. This feature is perhaps the MEANEST looking part of the knife.
2. The blade is made from VG-1 San Mai III steel which is unique to Cold Steel. My Black Talon was RAZOR sharp out of the box.
San Mai steel is so great because you get the edge retention and toughness of VG-1 stainless combined with the flexibility of 400 series stainless.
3. The pocket clip is reversible. I'm right handed, but many of left-handed friends are limited to certain pocketknives because they are only made for right-handed use.
4. The Black Talon's blade is hollow ground. This means that the blade gets thinner the closer you get to the edge. This feature gives the black talon a DEVASTATINGLY sharp cutting edge.
5. G-10 handle feels nice in your hand. Almost like sandpaper.
What I don't like:
1. The Point is VERY thin. This is good for puncturing and precise cuts. It is bad because it makes the tip somewhat vulnerable to breaking under hard enough use.
2. Cold Steel's Black Talon is very expensive. Unless you know where to get a good deal, you're gonna be forking out almost half a GRAND!
Overall: The Black Talon is worth the hefty price tag. Amazing materials + Gorgeous design = Awesome knife.
