City Wide Garage Sales - Hidden Riches!

City Wide Garage Sales - Hidden Riches!

Most of us remember going to at least one garage sale in our lives. It may have been called a yard sale, garage sale or flea market. The name didn't matter it was all the same. Other people selling what they thought was trash to people who thought the items were treasures.

Those people who find treasures are the people who feel euphoria at the sight of rummage sales. These people need to look at these yard sales in a new light. You can take this overwhelming urge and profit from it in several ways. You just have to find the way that suits you best.

Before going too far in this endeavor, check with your local government regarding laws and regulations of garage sales. Some places state that if you have more than a certain number of garage sales, like more than five, you have to claim all money made as income. Other places have no stipulations and regulations.

Once you have this knowledge, it is time to start. You may want to ask some of your friends who also enjoy going to city wide garage sales to join your adventure, or you may just want to keep it solo. The choice is completely yours.

Start by cleaning out your own home. As you go though it, price each piece. Place all the items together in one area. By pricing the items now, you will save some time later for your city wide garage sale.

Call your local newspaper and place an ad to run on Thursday and Friday. Make sure you state in the ad the date, times, location, and any specialty items you have. Always set the time for 30 minutes later than you actually want it. This way the people will start arriving when you want and not 20 to 30 minutes before.

The day before the city wide garage sale, put up signs around the main roads in your community. Make sure the poster board is a light color and that you use a large tip black marker for your lettering. Include the times, date and address of the yard sale. You may also want to preset your items on tables and hanger in the garage for a quick start in the morning.

During the sale, hand out flyers announcing that you will be having other rummage sales at intervals. Mention that new items will be for sale at each of the city wide yard sales. Hopefully, your customer will tell other people about your upcoming garage sales too. You can take the remaining flyers and put them in local stores and community bulletin boards, just remember to always ask first.

When the city wide garage sale is over pack up what is left and place it in a designated area. Take down your signs and count your money. Take the money that you initially put in for change, and then take change out for the next sale. Use the remainder to purchase more items at city wide garage sales in the weeks between your garage sales. Mark the new items as soon as you get them home, and place them with the rest of the items. Repeat this cycle as often as you like.

Another option is to rent space at a local flea market. Many people do not like to do this because of the need to haul the items back and forth. However, if you live in an apartment or in an out-of-the-way area, this may be the perfect solution.

You can also have online garage sales. In this instance, you sell the items as you wish, and can continue year round. There is no getting up early or setting anything up and taking it down. It is almost completely virtual.

Many garage sales online have blossomed into online auction sites, such as Amazon.com and eBay. There are printed books, e-books, periodicals, and classes to teach you how to make money on these sites. These virtual online garage sales can be done at anytime of day or night and anytime of year. Online garage sales may be the wave of the future.

Whichever you decide to do, or if you decide on a combination of the two types of garage sales, you will always have items to sell. City wide garage sales are constantly going on in some area, but auctions, estate auctions, and thrift stores are also good hunting grounds for items to sell on your garages sale online or in your front yard.

It is a little work to get it started but the more you do the more you will understand the mechanics of these sales, what sells and what doesn't, and how much to ask. In no time, you will be making money in your front yard and online garage sales.

Thanksgiving Sermons - Ideas for Sermons During the Season

Thanksgiving Sermons - Ideas for Sermons During the Season

Thanksgiving is a time when people across the United States give thanks for everything we have. Thanksgiving sermons are a great way to keep people focused on what is important at this time of year. Thanksgiving means different things to different people. The average person thinks about spending time with family or getting a day off from work. Other people look forward to watching the annual NFL games on television. Many shoppers look forward to Thanksgiving because they get to go to Black Friday holiday sales the next day.

Thanksgiving sermons are the best time to preach sermons about giving thanks. Here are some ideas for sermons during the Thanksgiving season.

Developing an Attitude of Gratitude

Times are tough for many people. It is easy to find things to complain about! Some people can't stop complaining about the economy. Other people have a job, but they hate going to work every day. Some people complain about being single. Many people even complain about the weather! The pastor can help people be gracious for everything that they have. Thanksgiving sermons help us develop an attitude of gratitude.

God commands his people to be thankful for everything that they have. It is not an option for us to complain about everything. We are living in sin if we complain about everything that is going on in our lives. We are always going to be the master, or we are going to be the victim. It is all about how we look at things. Do we want to be thankful for what we have, or are we going to complain about everything?

The First Thanksgiving

How many people really know how Thanksgiving began? I would venture to guess that even most Christians can't tell you the real story of the first Thanksgiving celebration. The modern day version of Thanksgiving was held in 1621 at the Plymouth Plantation. The pilgrims had a harvest feast after the growing season to give praise to God for his blessings. The pilgrims had plenty of things to complain about. Half of the people had died during the harsh winter of starvation or disease. Despite all of this death and disease, the pilgrims were still thankful and grateful for everything they had. During the early days, the Thanksgiving holiday was celebrated at different times in the different colonies. The annual day of Thanksgiving did not get an official date until the Civil War.

Sermon on the Sacrifice of Thanksgiving

Many people misunderstand the whole idea behind giving thanks for everything we have. In Psalm 50, God teaches the believers of the day how to give thanks. In Psalm 50:14, he commands us: "Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving." Christians need to understand what it means to sacrifice. Sacrifices cost us our time, money, and it requires us to die to ourselves.

Thanksgiving sermons are a great time to reflect on all of the blessings God has given us today. No matter what struggles we are going through today, there are many new things that God wants to teach us through Thanksgiving sermons.

The Drifters: The Best "White Christmas"

The Drifters: The Best "White Christmas"

When composer Irving Berlin wrote "White Christmas" in 1941, he insisted that the superstar of the day, crooner Bing Crosby, be the first to record it. Crosby's version, recorded for Decca on May 29, 1942, became the best-selling record of all time. But is it the best version of the song of wishing to be home for the holidays?

Facts of how and where Berlin wrote the song are murky, with accounts that he may have written it at one of his homes in New York or Beverly Hills; one account has the song composed poolside at the Biltmore Hotel in Phoenix, Arizona.

Though written in 1940, the song made its first appearance in the 1942 movie Holiday Inn. As troops left home in the shadow of World War II, the song's tale of longing to be home for Christmas became more poignant... and ensured its success.

More than a hundred cover versions of "White Christmas" have been recorded, from country (Chet Atkins) to gospel (Mahalia Jackson) to rock (Elvis Presley) to modern R&B (Babyface). Even Twisted Sister recorded the song. But for many, the Drifters' 1954 version remains the gold standard.

The Drifters of the early 1950s was a group that had scored hits on the rhythm & blues charts like "Money Honey" and "Honey Love." Built around high tenor Clyde McPhatter, who had just left Billy Ward and the Dominoes, the group included Bill Pinkney, brothers Andrew and Gerhart Thrasher and Willie Ferbie.

McPhatter was a revolutionary figure, fusing his gospel style with the R&B of the era to create the template for soul music. But McPhatter, singing falsetto, shared lead vocal duties on "White Christmas" with bass man Bill Pinkney, resulting in a unique and memorable sound. But it would be years before the song would even be heard by most of America... white America.

In the early 1950s, racism prevented black groups like the Drifters from getting airplay on radio stations with white audiences. When "White Christmas" was released, it reached number 2 on Billboard's R&B chart, but only made number 80 on the pop charts. The song was rarely heard until used in the 1990 film Home Alone, lip-synched by a young Macauley Culkin, who sings into a comb as he applies his father's after shave.

The song's appearance in that hit movie (and subsequently in The Santa Clause) made the Drifters' version a staple on rock, pop and country stations every Christmas season. It even became a popular Internet cartoon by animator Joshua Held. Ironically, the song's release signaled the end to the first chapter of the Drifters' story.

Clyde McPhatter was drafted into the Army soon after the song's release and thanks to its success, Atlantic Records decided to make McPhatter a solo act. McPhatter followed with two big hits, "A Lover's Question" and "Lover Please," but his success was soon eclipsed by the soul singers he had inspired. McPhatter died in 1972.

What happened to Bill Pinkney and the other Drifters is part of rock history. In 1958, Drifters' manager George Treadwell fired the entire group at the Apollo theater, replacing them overnight with the members of the Crowns. These "new" Drifters - Ben E. King, Charlie Thomas, Doc Green and Elsbeary Hobbs - and their successors went on to become one of the most popular singing groups in history, recording iconic hits like "There Goes my Baby," "Save the Last Dance for Me," "Under the Boardwalk," and "Up on the Roof."

The last of the original Drifters, Bill Pinkney, continued to record and perform with his group until his death in 2007.

New Friday The 13th Film - Friday the 13th; The Legend

New Friday The 13th Film - Friday the 13th; The Legend

So the back and forth continues like a Maria Sharapova/Venus Williams tennis match (Yes these are the only womens tennis players I know of). We've learned today from arrow in the head that the new upcoming "Friday the 13th" film will officially be titled Friday the 13th The Legend. The film also will not be a prequel to or a remake of "Friday the 13th", but rather will fit somewhere in the timeline between "Friday the 13th:Jason Takes Manhattan" and "Jason Goes To Hell:The Final Friday". The scooper who informed AITH of this also gave them some more juicy bits about the upcoming new Jason movie. Read on below for more.

A Scooper tells AITH...

This past weekend, screenwriter Mark Wheaton turned in a ninety-six page draft regarding his plans for the newly announced Friday the 13th re-imagining. After spending much of my Saturday afternoon Xeroxing copies for studio heads (including producer Brad Fuller and the now-directing John Liebesman), I was able to take an hour break and skim through Jason's newest slay-fest. Each day I'll give you a "taste" of some of the more interesting sequences of the script, starting with the opening.

FIRST OFF: There is not a single reference to JASON X or FREDDY VS. JASON to be found within the story. Although the exact date for the sequence of events that are occurring is never mentioned, the film takes place somewhere between the events of JASON TAKES MANHATTAN and JASON GOES TO HELL.

This film, titled Friday the 13th: The Legend, opens in the style of Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter with a group of just arrived Crystal Lake camp counselors sharing tales of the infamous Jason Voorhees among a campfire. I'm interested to see how this will play out, because they make reference to several of the more stand-out kills of the first eight films (i.e. sleeping bag pounding, wheelchair victim, cracking of the Sheriff in pt. 6) as wells as some of the "deaths" that Jason endured (particularly the butchering in pt. 4's finale).

It sounds like New Line just wanted to do a back to basics, balls to the wall, new Jason flick set at Camp Crystal Lake. It also sounds like they are fully aware of how bad "Jason Takes Manhattan" and "Jason Goes to Hell" were and this might be some sort of attempt to make up for both movies. Either way, "Friday the 13th:The Legend" is expected out in 2007.
